Santa Paws will be at Little Paws Inn from 12-4 on Saturday, December 7. Bring the dogs, cats, hedgehogs, chinchillas, snakes, bearded dragons…well, basically anything, to sit on Santa Paw’s lap to get photos done for this holiday season. Donations will be graciously accepted!
The talent Photos by Ari will be donating his time and talents to CaliCan as well!
And don’t forget we’ll also be selling Chewed Slippers Photography ”Mini Love” photo session packages for $25 (originally $125).
Bring out your CaliCan pups (we’d love to see you guys) and non CaliCan pets (we’d love to meet you!) to see the man in red!
Last year we had the distinct pleasure of writing a blog post thanking Jason Fletcher (one of the adoptive pawrents of a chihuahua-pug mix named Rickie) for his support of CaliCan Rescue! Here’s a link to the post to refresh your memory.
This year, Jason contacted us again to let us know that Fortis once again allowed him to select us as a charity of choice to fundraise for. And we were thrilled to hear that not only were they going to fundraise for us, but they were going to collect much needed items for another local rescue here who assists dogs on reserve. We were ecstatic!
On August 14, 2013, CaliCan Board Member Kari, volunteer Kelli and her dog Mojito, with Molly the Poodle in tow, visited the offices of Fortis Alberta once again!
It was such a tremendous day, both weather wise and just enthusiasm from the staff at the Fortis offices! Last year, Jason had an autographed Taylor Hall jersey complete with certificate of authenticity…so this year, the staff were eager to see just what he managed to acquire for the raffle prize this year!
And of course, he did not disappoint! The room went silent as he pulled out an autographed Wayne Gretzky autographed jersey, also with certificate of authenticity. Jaws dropped, the room filled with gasps (and the odd expletive as well haha) – and instantly folks were grabbing for their wallets to purchase tickets. There were even cases of bartering.
The enthusiasm that Jason generated for animal rescue, by having us there and by promoting the efforts the other local rescue does, was nothing short of amazing. We are ever so grateful of all of our supporters, and especially when they give us opportunities such as these to promote rescue on a grand scale.
Thanks to Jason and his staff at Fortis, they successfully raised $1210 for us and $1000 worth of supplies for the other organization!!! I think we can all give them a hearty “woof woof” and applause for their support!
In the four years that CalCan has been operational, we have been blessed to get to work alongside of tremendous supporters, friends, and organizations! In 2011, Champion Pet Foods approached us about a food donation program they offer to rescues. They would provide us food to supply our foster homes with, so that we can put funds towards the care and rescue of future dogs.

Since then, we’ve had a great working relationship with the staff there. Recently, we expanded our efforts to accept local surrender dogs, plus have begun doing more adoption events requiring more of our California pups to go direct to foster instead of immediate trial visits. And we’ve also begun working on a nutrition education program, since there is so much bad food on the market. WIth so many programs under way, we wanted to work with a tremendous organization to keep these going. So we connected with Champion Pet Foods about these projects, and Diana (our account representative) was eager to help out! We did not identify how much food we were hoping to get, and simply left it up to them to decide. After all, whatever they can contribute is still amazing! Imagine our surprise when we receive an email from one of the Warehouse Team Members, Angie, telling us that our donation of 939.18kg of food was ready to be picked up! WOW! We did some quick math and realized that 939.18kg of food is 2070lbs…which is just over ONE TON OF FOOD donated to us by Champion Pet Foods!
What ONE TON of food looks like!
Needless to say, this extraordinary donation to us is going to be very well used by CaliCan dogs, local and Californian alike! We are so grateful to the support of the staff at Champion Pet Foods, and encourage you all to at least check out their products! Our own personal pets are fed Acana Burbank Potato & Chicken. About Acana Products You can read more about the quality of their food direct on their website at championpetfoods.com – but here’s at least some information we pulled from there.
- Biologically appropriate food –> this basically means that the food has been designed to support the unique structure of your pet and their dietary needs! The brands within Acana contain “whole meats that dogs and cats would encounter in their natural environment – meats they are naturally evolved to eat”
- Ingredients are LOCAL and are sustaianbily raised. They are never frozen and always preservative free.
- No water is added to the product, allowing the products to be steam-cooked in their own juices, retaining all the flavour of the ingredients!
There is far more information and we highly encourage you to check them out. Champion Pet Foods doesn’t spend money on advertising, because their product speaks (loudly) for itself. And for those of you with big breed dogs, or dogs with a palate wanting richer flavors and higher protein levels, check out their Orijen flavors! Once again – thank you Champion Pet Foods!!
We also want to thank Checker Storage (without them, we’d have no place to store the food!) and our friend, Todd (for helping transport the food to the locker).
